STC Rating Estimator for Wall Assemblies
Estimate the Sound Transmission Class (STC) of a stud wall: wood or metal studs, staggered or double studs, insulation, gypsum layers and resilient channel.
- Wood 2×4, 2×6, metal, staggered and double stud framing
- Insulation, one or two layers of gypsum each side, resilient channel
- STC range compared with the IBC minimum of 50 between dwelling units
- Wall section diagram
How to use
- Choose the framing: wood 2×4 or 2×6, 25 gauge metal studs, staggered studs or double studs.
- Set one or two layers of 5/8" gypsum board on each side, and whether the cavity is insulated.
- Turn on resilient channel if one side is mounted on it. It has no added effect on staggered or double studs, which are already decoupled.
- Read the estimated STC range against the IBC minimum of STC 50 between dwelling units.
- This is an estimate from typical published values, not a tested rating. Use a tested assembly for code compliance.
