Stair Calculator: Risers, Treads and Switchback Landings
Work out the number of risers, riser height, treads and total run from floor-to-floor height. Straight or switchback stairs with an adjustable landing.
- Riser count and exact riser height from floor-to-floor height
- Tread count and total run
- Switchback stairs with an adjustable landing height

How to use
- Enter the floor-to-floor height: finished floor to finished floor.
- Enter the maximum riser height your code allows (for example 7 3/4" under the IRC, 7" under the IBC) and the tread depth.
- Straight: read the number of risers, the exact riser height, the number of treads and the total run. There is always one tread fewer than risers.
- Switchback: the stair is split at a landing. Use the arrows to move the landing up or down a riser and see each flight’s risers, treads and run.
- Length fields accept the same entries as the Feet and Inches Calculator: 9' 6, 7 3/4", 2743mm or 3m + 6'. A plain number means inches, or millimeters when the Units panel is set to metric.
