Embodied Carbon Calculator for Building Materials (A1–A3)

Estimate the cradle-to-gate embodied carbon of concrete, steel, wood, masonry, glass and insulation from industry-average EPDs.

How to use

  1. Pick a material on each row and enter the quantity in the unit shown. Insulation also takes its R-value, since thicker insulation carries more carbon.
  2. Add rows with Add material. If a Concrete Calculator is open, From Concrete Calc adds its volume as a row.
  3. Enter the gross floor area to see the carbon intensity, the figure most embodied carbon targets use.
  4. Results are cradle-to-gate (stages A1–A3): extraction, transport to the factory and manufacturing. Wood values leave out the carbon stored in the wood.
  5. Industry averages are a starting point. Use product-specific EPDs (from EC3 or the supplier) for a whole-building LCA or a Buy Clean submission.
